From The Mummy to the tummy: Brendan Fraser hits the gym in an effort to get his action hero figure back

He made female audiences swoon playing a muscular action hero in The Mummy film franchise, and even as dim-witted but six-packed George Of The Jungle.

But many years have passed since Brendan Fraser's late Nineties heyday, and the actor has succumbed to piling on the pounds in recent years.

But it appears as though the 42-year-old is on a mission to reclaim his old figure, as he was pictured leaving a gym in West Hollywood yesterday.

Brendan covered up his extra pounds in a grey T-shirt and Adidas tracksuit bottoms for his workout.

He looked a little puffed out but flashed a smile at photographers as he cooled down with an energy drink.

Fraser gained weight last year after completing work on his family comedy Furry Vengeance.

Brendan is preparing to film two back-to-back projects this year. First he will star in Irish heist comedy Whole Lotta Sole with Sophie Okonedo.

After that he will star as the husband of Mad Men's Christina Hendricks in Seconds Of Pleasure.

The film, about the lives of people on the same flight, also stars Ed Harris, Matt Dillon, Julia Stiles and Kristin Scott Thomas. It will begin filming this summer in the UK.

Brendan recently completed a stint on Broadway in the play Elling.
